We love to hear from newbie gardeners whose plants get a literal kick out of Bloom, so we were excited to get this photo from DC Water employee Kevin Harrison, who works at our Main Pump Station as a utility system operator.

Kevin says, “With the rising cost of food and becoming more conscious of what I consume, I wanted to take on the hobby of gardening. I believe that it is important to know what you are putting into your body, and the best way to know is to grow your own foods.

Being an employee of DC Water, I was able to pick up Bloom from Blue Plains. I watched countless videos about Bloom, which suggested not to plant directly into Bloom so I mixed it with store-bought soil. Within three to four days I began to see the seedlings starting to sprout. After a couple weeks the plants really started to grow. From there, I was hooked: I became a full-blown gardener.

I began with vegetables that were easy to grow during the summer months such as tomatoes, green onion, kale, and cucumbers. Due to the extreme heat, we have faced this summer, I was only able to harvest a small number of vegetables, but still not bad for a first-time gardener. I recently started on my fall garden that should be ready to harvest mid-fall.”
