This fall, Bloom made a big impact in the DC community by growing and distributing over 1,600 leafy green seedlings. The majority were donated to community gardens that provide local residents access to fresh, nutritious produce such as our partners DPR Lederer Community Gardens and Edgewood Community Farm.
Many of the remaining seedlings grown in Bloom’s greenhouse went to community members planting with Bloom for the first time. One such DC gardener, Elizabeth Elson, shared her excitement: “My Bloom-grown seedlings are not just surviving but thriving! I’ve already been harvesting the arugula and tatsoi—they’re both delicious.”
Leafy greens are a perfect crop for extending the summer’s bounty into the colder months in the DMV area. Our experience at our greenhouse along with feedback from local gardeners has shown that Bloom’s woody blend is an ideal growing medium for leafy greens. The blend is rich in organic matter and essential nutrients, such as nitrogen, which support robust, healthy leafy green growth for plants.
