This month, Bloom is featured as a pioneer in sustainability by Planet Forward, a project of the George Washington University School of Media & Public Affairs. Led by Emmy Award-winning journalist Frank Sesno, Planet Forward promotes innovative ideas to address the environmental challenges confronting our planet.

Students Melanie Rocha and Curie Kim developed the multimedia piece Blue Plains: A Journey of Wastewater to Sustainable Treasure to take readers behind the scenes to learn the history, the process and the people behind Bloom.

As they write, “At Blue Plains Advanced Wastewater Treatment Plant, waste is not a problem but an opportunity to be seized. With innovative technology and a commitment to environmental sustainability, Blue Plains and its passionate engineers are redefining how we think about waste.”

In the piece, Chris Peot, DC Water’s Director of Resource Recovery, highlights Blue Plains’ efforts to reclaim nutrients and carbon that nourish soils and plants, capture renewable energy, and cut emissions.
